“So what’s going on with autism? When you look at the tremendous increase, it’s really — it’s such an incredible — it’s really a horrible thing to watch, the tremendous amount of increase.”
— President Trump, remarks at meeting with educators, Feb. 14, 2017
The best evidence available today does not support the notion that autism rates are increasing, let alone increasing dramatically, as the President suggested. The reality is that the jury is still out. Some seeming increases disappear when investigators factor in increased reporting by parents and doctors and a broadening of the definition of autism for diagnostic purposes.
The Washington Post gives the President 3 out 4 Pinocchios. In other words, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and apparently hasn’t bothered consulting with the people who do know what their talking about.
