damagecontrolIt is sad that Vice President Pence has to spend much of his European visit doing damage control for the irresponsible things President Trump has been saying about the NATO alliance, which has been the foundation for peace in Europe for seventy years, and the EU, which is the economic counter part to NATO.

Trump has described NATO as “obsolete,” has dismissed the EU as “a vehicle for Germany” and has predicted that others will follow Britain in leaving the EU. When you tie this with his unprecedented embrace of Russia, it is understandable that European leaders would almost think he is trying to dismantle NATO and EU in order to make it easier for a newly expansionist Russia to regain some of the territory it lost when the Soviet Union fell.

Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, said the meetings with Mike Pence were “truly needed.”

So sad.
